Sunderworld, Vol. I: The Extraordinary Disappointments of Leopold Berry
By Ransom Riggs
Ransom Riggs is back with a new fantasy series. Is he losing his mind, again? Leopold Berry is seeing things that are not there, or are they? At age 12, after the passing of his mother, Leopold found VHS tapes with the one and only season of a show called Max's Adventures in Sunderland, and he, along with his best friend Emmet, became obsessed with the show. Now, years later, Leopold and Emmet have discovered Sunderland is a real place.
Even if this wasn't written by Ransom Riggs, I would have picked it up just because the cover art is fantastic. I also happen to be a fan of the Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series written by Ransom Riggs so I had high hopes for this book and it did not disappoint. It is odd, funny, and engaging. The world and character development for book one get the reader hooked and wanting an immediate second installment.
