Early Literacy

Early literacy encompasses everything a child understands about reading and writing before they can read or write. A key component of early literacy is letter knowledge, which includes recognizing that letters are distinct from one another, knowing their names and sounds, and identifying letters in various contexts. A simple and effective way to enhance letter knowledge is by having children practice writing their names.

  •  I enjoy books and stories.
  •  I can use different writing tools, such as crayons and pencils.
  •  I know how to use a book: where to start, how to turn pages, and that the words and pictures tell a story.
  • I know some of the letters of the alphabet.
  • I can write some of the letters in my first name.
  • I know and practice some rhyming words (like pat, hat, cat, and bat).
